Afternoon’s spent with Radio Zaachilla

While in Oaxaca we spent a few afternoons making the trip to Zaachilla, Oaxaca to visit Radio Zaachilla 96.3 FM. Radio Zaachilla largely falls under the definition of a community radio project, yet because of it’s unique political conditions operates mostly independently of conditions that apply to other community radio stations in Mexico.

Zaachilla is a very beautiful agricultural community outside of Oaxaca city, below are some untranslated moments from our time spent distracting Zaachilla’s director from the Feria del Maiz.

C.A.C.I.T.A

C.A.C.I.T.A. (Autonomous Center for the Intercultural Creation of Appropriate Technologies) just celebrated 8 years as a collective organization in Oaxaca. They are involved in various projects in Oaxaca City and neighboring communities, including initiating technical projects involving reworked bicycle machinery for everything from pumping water from the ground to powering household appliances.

Talking with Radio Planton

Anyone who attended one of the screenings we held in preparation for this trip, or has seen the documentary “Un Poquito de Tanta Verdad” will immediately recognize RADIO PLANTON as the free radio station often discussed in regard to the 2006 Oaxacan uprising.

At Espacio Zapata

Still fortunate enough to be in Oaxaca..

We bumped into Mario from Espacio Zapata and had the opportunity to speak with him about their collective space and political art in Oaxaca after 2006. Espacio Zapata is another brilliant collective space which emerged out of Dos Mil Seis (2006) and is in heavy production of public programs, banners, stickers, silk-screened posters and more.

Arte Jaguar, Oaxaca

While in Oaxaca one of the guys from ARTE JAGUAR has been kind enough to put us up in his house while we make our rounds doing free radio research/interviews and the like.

Besides being one of the dopest crews in Mexico- ARTE JAGUAR is often written about because of their relation to the DOS MIL SEIS (2006) Oaxacan uprising alongwith RADIO PLANTON and other outlets for free media which bloomed during the turmoil over the teacher’s strikes.

Auditorio Che Guevara

Last weekend and days after landing here in Mexico City we were invited to work with a friend and artist on a project at the Auditorio Che Guevara on campus at the UNAM. We spent several hours one afternoon building mysterious paper mache tunnels in the incredible space at the Che. The Che recently celebrated it’s 12th anniversary since initially being occupied in the 1999 student protests. It’s autonomously organized and houses various political organziations which operate a performance theatre, cafeteria, video and zine library (Fanzinoteca/videoteka), computer cafe, public programs, punk shows and way way more.

The paper mache tunnels we assisted in making were part of a multi-layered inaugural youth arts project that kicked off this past week’s summer community programming at the Che.

“If work was so grand, the wealthy would save it for themselves.”

Working hard in D.F. to get our new website up so that I can begin to share the daily process of working on Wave Manual. In the meantime we still need as much assistance w/donations and promoting the Kickstarter aspect of the project.
